Google is reportedly working on enhancing Gemini Live by integrating support for Gemini Apps. These apps allow the Gemini AI chatbot to connect with various services such as Google Drive, Spotify, and Gmail, thereby extending its functionality. The introduction of app support in Gemini Live could substantially enrich the user experience. Gemini Live functions by enabling users to share their screen or camera feed with Google’s AI chatbot for immediate analysis.
This innovative feature was broadly released in April and is now available to everyone at no cost. As Google develops Gemini Live, it appears to be aiming to incorporate one of Gemini’s most advantageous features: the capability to use Extensions Apps. With Gemini Apps, users can interact with different services seamlessly, whether it’s searching for documents on Google Drive or controlling smart home devices with voice commands. Users can set alarms, make calls, and even manage music playback—all facilitated by natural language commands.
A recent analysis of the beta version of the Google app for Android indicates that Google is in the process of transitioning Gemini Apps support to Gemini Live. However, full access to this feature may take some time to roll out, as Google is likely to implement it in phases, similar to the rollout strategy used for Gemini. Currently, Gemini Live allows users to ask questions or brainstorm ideas while sharing their screen or camera feed. The addition of app support might enable users to issue commands through their camera.
For example, users could aim their camera at a smart home light and request its control through the Gemini Live interface. If fully realized, Gemini Apps could significantly enhance the capabilities of Gemini Live, potentially mirroring the functionality of standard Gemini. This integration could be especially beneficial not only on mobile devices but also on Google’s upcoming Android XR-powered smart glasses, developed in collaboration with Samsung.
