Google is actively working on a compact taskbar for Android phones, aimed at enhancing multitasking capabilities similar to those found on tablets and foldable devices. Recent updates to this previously dormant feature have included fixes for visual bugs and the introduction of a new phone-exclusive icon. This icon allows users to access a carousel displaying their six most recently used apps. Despite these updates, challenges persist with the current implementation.
Notably, the recent apps carousel remains non-functional, and there are visual cut-offs in certain home-screen grid configurations, indicating that the taskbar is still in its early development phase. While modern smartphones possess the power for seamless multitasking, Android must balance these functionalities with a visually coherent experience, avoiding cluttered interfaces. On larger devices like tablets, the taskbar can effectively support multitasking due to the ample screen space that accommodates more user interface elements. Google has previously hinted at a dedicated taskbar for Android phones, with partial implementation detected in Android 15.
A Beta 4 build last year showcased preliminary code for this taskbar, which resembled designs from foldables such as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Samsung devices. Recent updates, highlighted by Android leaker Mishaal Rahman, signal that Google has not fully abandoned the idea of a smartphone taskbar. The new taskbar icon, which is not available on tablets, effectively utilizes the limited screen space by offering a dedicated way to view recently accessed apps. While the smartphone taskbar is unlikely to debut with Android 16 due to ongoing development needs, including non-responsive app selection in the carousel and display issues, Google is exploring other multitasking options.
This includes a Samsung DeX-like desktop mode, anticipated to be launched with Android 17 next year.
