Microsoft Discontinues Password Management Features in Authenticator App

Microsoft is set to phase out the password management and autofill features of its Authenticator app between June and August 2025. The company plans to consolidate these functions exclusively within the Microsoft Edge browser. Users wishing to utilize saved passwords and addresses for autofill will need to transition to the Edge browser on their smartphones and designate it as their autofill provider.

It is important to note that payment information stored in Authenticator will not be migrated and will be deleted in July 2025. Despite the removal of password management features, Microsoft Authenticator will still support two-factor authentication (2FA) codes and passkeys. Users should ensure that the app remains the default for Passkey Provider.

While Authenticator has functioned as both a 2FA tool and a password manager, Microsoft’s new direction aims to offer a more integrated user experience within Edge. According to a recent support post from Microsoft, the process of discontinuing the app’s password management capabilities will begin in June 2025 and will be fully completed by August 2025. The timeline includes:

– June 2025: New passwords can no longer be saved in Authenticator.

– July 2025: Autofill functionality within Authenticator will cease. – August 2025: All saved passwords will be inaccessible in the app. To continue accessing saved passwords and addresses, users must install Edge on their smartphones.

They can sync their data securely by signing in with their Microsoft account. While users will continue to enjoy autofill capabilities with Edge, it is important to keep in mind that payment information cannot be synced and will need to be manually re-entered for use. For those who prefer not to utilize Edge, there is an option to export passwords from the Authenticator app to another password manager.

This can be accomplished through the app settings. Meanwhile, passkey functionalities will remain unchanged as long as the app is kept as the default provider.
