Roku TV users are currently facing an issue with washed-out colors on HDR content following a recent software update. This problem seems to be predominantly affecting TCL Roku TVs, while some Hisense Roku TVs are also experiencing similar color degradation.
In light of this issue, Roku has begun an investigation, and users are advised to utilize the Roku Stick as a temporary workaround to avoid this color problem. Roku provides a comprehensive streaming ecosystem, ranging from traditional televisions upgraded to smart capabilities with devices like the Roku Streaming Stick, to televisions equipped with built-in streaming technology.
The success of the Roku platform is not solely attributed to its hardware; the intuitive user interface of the Roku OS also plays a significant role. However, these strengths do not guarantee an optimal streaming experience, especially for those with Roku TVs that have recently updated.
Many users have taken to the company’s Issue Tracking Board to express their frustrations about the color issues, particularly in HDR content since the release of software version 14.5. While the majority of reports highlight problems with HDR streaming on Disney+, others mention similar concerns across platforms like YouTube TV, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video.
Interestingly, Roku’s menus and application interfaces display accurate colors, with the color washing out only during HDR playback. To navigate the washed-out colors on HDR content, users should consider utilizing a Roku Stick, as it appears that the malfunction is specifically tied to the firmware on Roku TVs.
Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent the automatic installation of updates, and until Roku implements a fix, using an external streaming device will remain the primary solution. The Roku Streaming Stick 4K stands out as a reliable option, providing seamless integration and excellent performance for HDR content.
