Google Messages is in the process of rolling out a new feature called “Delete for everyone,” currently available to select users on the beta channel. This update allows users to unsend messages within a 15-minute window. However, it is noteworthy that this option seems primarily limited to large group conversations as of now. Previously, apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage have allowed users to retract messages they regret sending.
Google Messages was the last significant messaging platform without such a feature, although testing for the “Delete for everyone” option began in late March. Now, reports indicate that some beta users are beginning to see this functionality. For instance, a Reddit user has observed the “Delete for everyone” button in a group chat containing 12 participants, but it is absent in smaller groups or individual chats. Users still have the option to delete messages just for themselves if they prefer.
Despite running the latest beta versions on high-end devices like the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Ultra, the option is not universally available, suggesting a limited rollout. The 15-minute unsend window is likely enabled by RCS Universal Profile 2.7, which includes support for message deletion. When a message is deleted, the app displays a “Message deleted” indicator, which aligns with WhatsApp’s approach, unlike Telegram, where deleted messages leave no trace. As with other new features, the public release of the delete function in Google Messages may take some time, as seen with the recent rollout of text editing capabilities.
Meanwhile, the app continues to gain new functionalities, including new methods to combat RCS spam and custom icons for group chats.
